In a letter to the school community, Miller Place Union Free School District Superintendent Dr. Marianne F. Cartisano said three positive COVID cases were contact traced on Monday, March 8, resulting in 18 additional students being quarantined as close contacts.

On Tuesday, March 9, another four students tested positive, with at least another three symptomatic students who are pending test results.

"We expect these new seven cases will identify approximately another 40 to 90 students needing to be quarantined," Cartisano stated. "We believe that the majority of these cases may be the result of outside the district student contact, including weekend parties and/or gatherings."

Miller Place High School closed for all students as of 2 p.m. Tuesday, shifting to remote learning for the rest of this week.

There will be no afterschool activities for the rest of this week including drama, varsity, and junior varsity athletics, play rehearsals, through Sunday, March 14.

The SAT exam scheduled for Saturday, March 13 is also canceled.

"We expect it to be rescheduled for later this month or in April," Cartisano said. "Students will be contacted by SAT directly regarding refunds and rescheduling."

The district will re-evaluate the status of the high school positive cases, and close contacts, throughout the week to determine when in-person instruction and all student activities will resume, Cartisano noted.
